What the archive records
Gonzalo Varela is a senior economist at the World Bank, leading its trade engagement in Pakistan. Originally from Uruguay, he studied economics there before completing a PhD in the United Kingdom on real exchange rate uncertainty and its effects on production decisions in developing economies. He joined the World Bank's global trade unit before moving into country-specific work and authored the Pakistan Development Update, fall 2021 issue, focused on reviving exports.
